Fr. Joseph Sito

Diocese: Archdiocese of Detroit MI
Ordained: 1962
Status of Accusation: Convicted

Resigned from his position in 1993 following a credible accusation of engaging in sexual misconduct with a minor during the 1960s. The victim had informed the archdiocese about the incident in 1985, but no action was taken. The victim reported the incident again in 1993, leading to Sito’s “retirement.” After receiving treatment at two facilities, he was prohibited from participating in public ministry. In 1999, Sito faced criminal charges for molesting a 17-year-old youth, to which he pleaded guilty to a lesser offense and paid a fine. Despite these actions, he would occasionally conduct mass. On January 12, 2004, his laicization was officially announced. Sito passed away on January 4, 2016, at the age of 80, in a car accident outside of Detroit. His name was included on the archdiocese’s list of individuals who have been credibly accused on June 10, 2019.
