Holding the Church Accountable: The Story of Rev. James Aloysius Mulvey
Rev. James Aloysius Mulvey, born January 3, 1880, and ordained in the Diocese of Grand Rapids on August 27, 1905, served various parishes and communities for over five decades. His extensive service saw him stationed across Michigan, from Grand Rapids to Bay City, contributing to numerous congregations and serving as a war chaplain during World War I. Despite his seemingly distinguished career, allegations of a darker legacy have emerged, casting a shadow over his tenure.
Rev. Mulvey passed away on November 7, 1959, at 79. However, his legacy was profoundly altered when, in April 2019, the Diocese of Saginaw publicly named him as credibly accused of sexual abuse of a minor. This revelation, emerging posthumously, highlights the pervasive issue of clergy sexual abuse and underscores the importance of seeking justice for survivors.
