Fr. Joseph Smetana

Diocese: Archdiocese of Detroit MI
Ordained: 1956
Status of Accusation: Accused

Having dedicated 31 years of his life to the priesthood in Nicaragua, Smetana’s name emerged in the “Report of the Audit and Review of the Files of the Capuchin Province of St. Joseph” on 6/18/13, where he was identified as a current friar with substantiated reports of sexual abuse involving minors. Unfortunately, no further details regarding the allegations against him were provided. Consequently, he was promptly removed from public ministry and placed under close supervision. Furthermore, his name was also featured on the list released by the La Crosse diocese on 1/18/20, indicating that he had previously served at St. Henry in Eau Galle. As a result of these grave accusations, he has been permanently barred from any future involvement in ministry.
