Fr. Raymond J. Hoefgen

Diocese: Diocese of Marquette MI
Ordained: 1963
Status of Accusation: Accused

In 1994, the diocese received a report regarding Hoefgen’s sexual abuse of two young girls, who were sisters aged 9 and 11, during the 1960s in Sault Ste. Marie. Following this report, Hoefgen was sent for treatment but was still allowed to continue his ministry. However, in April 2002, diocesan officials confronted him after the sisters reached out to the diocese, and during this confrontation, Hoefgen admitted to his misconduct with the girls and also confessed to inappropriate touching of his niece. As a result, he was sent to St. Luke’s Institute for evaluation and was permanently removed from his position in May 2002. Hoefgen passed away on January 17, 2012, and his case was included in the Michigan Attorney General’s report on October 22.
