Compassionate Pursuits: Supporting Survivors of Father Richard T. Craig’s Abuse and the Path to Healing
In the relentless pursuit of justice and healing for survivors of clergy abuse, the Clergy Abuse Coalition stands as unwavering advocates, offering support and legal representation for those who have suffered immense harm. One such distressing case that underscores the pressing need for systemic change within the Church and its response to allegations of sexual misconduct involves Father Richard T. Craig.
In 1991, disturbing revelations surfaced regarding Father Richard T. Craig’s actions within the Diocese of Marquette. A courageous young boy confided in his Catholic Social Services counselor, detailing distressing encounters. Father Craig’s inappropriate behavior included kissing the boy on the lips, hugging him, sharing a bed, and insisting on being addressed as “Daddy.”
Following these troubling disclosures, the Diocese Sex Abuse Team took immediate action, launching an investigation that uncovered a deeply disturbing pattern of abuse. Father Craig, in the wake of these investigations, sought a leave of absence from the diocese for “personal reasons,” seeking treatment at various facilities. However, the horror persisted.
In September 1993, another brave minor came forward, recounting how Father Craig had violated him during a camping trip. An internal review by the diocese substantiated this harrowing claim, leading to a unanimous agreement that Father Craig should resign from his priestly ministry. This served as a stark reminder of the critical and urgent need for accountability and justice in confronting clergy abuse.
Fast forward to May 10, 2018, when Father Craig was invited to be voluntarily defrocked. Presently, his name sadly stands on the diocese’s list of priests who have committed sexual misconduct against minors, underscoring the ongoing battle against abuse within religious institutions. The urgency of this issue demands our attention and collective action to ensure a safer future for all.
